Verity 4⭐️/5

Verity by Colleen Hoover

4⭐️/5

I chose to read this during the daylight hours because #selfcare

May be some spoilers ahead, it’s less of a review and more a reader-response, but just in case! If you want to go in totally blind, don’t read the rest!

Despite my best efforts not to lose sleep, Verity still managed to sufficiently creep me out. It’s relentlessly bold, twisted, consuming, and manipulative but turns out I’m okay with it? Hoover experiments with narrative and storytelling in a way that keeps you engaged until the very end.

This book was majorly hyped up, and for the most part, it lived up to the hype as far as writing (masterful!), setting (creepy asf), and character development (I questioned a lot of motives a LOT of the time).

The only downside to a hyped up thriller is that my guesses grew more over-the-top as we headed towards the climax, much too ridiculously fantastical than they might have been otherwise. I enjoyed guessing all the same, and didn’t even guess right! But the hype did somewhat contribute to my reading experience in that it left the ending a little less “blow me away” than I was expecting.

I do think this book went through some mood swings at times. There are some graphic parts of this novel that fit with the story she’s trying to tell, but there was also an overwhelming amount that seemed unnecessary and distracting. Though, perhaps that was the intention? This book does make you question just about everything!

This is a disturbing, suspenseful novel. Hoover does ask her reader to take a chance on the bizarre circumstances our protagonist finds herself in, and I say - why not! If you’re willing to do that, you’re in for a chilling (and entertaining) ride.
